Die Royal Air Tatoo in Fairford gilt als die größte Airshow in Europa. Wer möglichst viele Premieren von neuem Fluggerät und Vorführungen diverser Displayteams sowie möglichst viele britische Oldies sehen möchte, wird hier nicht enttäuscht.

Zum ersten und leider auch zum letzten Mal gab es einen Service, den man einfach nicht ausschlagen konnte. Die Dauair offerierte einen Flug von Dortmund direkt auf das Airshow-Gelände in Fairford. Das Angebot war einfach sensationell. Morgens konnte man noch zu Hause frühstücken, wenig später in Fairford die Airshow genießen und abends wieder daheim bereits die Bilder sortieren. Leider ging die Airline kurz nach der Veranstaltung in Involvenz. Es bleibt zu hoffen, das dieses Angebot Nachahmer findet.

Im Mittelpunkt des Interesses stand die Europapremiere des Kipprotoflugzeuges Bell/Boeing MV22B Osprey. Es hat Jahrzehnte gedauert, die komplizierte Steuerung des Kipprotors in den Griff zu bekommen. Der Prototyp wies eine erstaunliche Wendigkeit auf und der Pilot verstand es, das Fluggerät fotofreundlich zu bewegen.

Für Freunde schweren Flugerätes ist Fairford die einzige Möglichkeit, außerhalb der USA die aktuelle amerikanische Bomberflotte wie die B-1B Lancer und die B-52H Stratofortress im Flug zu verfolgen. Leider wurde hier nur ein Minimalprogramm mit einem einfachen Überflug geboten.

Besonders gefallen hat das Display Mikoyan MIG-29M OVT. Während in Berlin noch in extermer Entfernung zum Publikum geflogen wurde, konnte hier ein kürzerer Abstand gehalten werden. Die Manövierfähigkeit der MIG erreicht dank Schubvektorsteuerung bis dato kein westliches Muster. Es verdient einfach Hochachtung, was russische Konstrukteure mit wenig Aufwand und konstruktivem "Querdenken" auf die Beine stellten. Es bleibt nur zu hoffen, das sich auch ein wirtschaftlicher Erfolg einstellt.

In Fairford verabschiede sich auch DER Oldi der britischen Luftwaffe - die Canberra. Nach 57 Jahren gehen die letzten Muster in den Ruhestand.
