Die Air Base 701 in Salon de Provence in einem der schönsten Landesteile Frankreichs feierte ihren 70. Geburtstag. Tausenden Piloten wurde hier die hohe Kunst des Fliegen beigebracht. Allein die Gebäude schon hinterliesen einen gepflegten und imposanten Eindruck. Leider hielt sich das französische Militär vornehm zurück. Nur eine 4er-Formation Mirage 2000 verwiess auf eine Militärbasis

Gezeigt wurde vor allem der typische Mix aus historischen Fluggerät und Displayteams. Die Zuschauer mussten sich vorher entscheiden, ob sie lieber an der Display-Achse stehen oder an der Landebahn die Starts verfolgen. Wartezeiten waren damit vorprogrammiert. Die Patrouille de France nutzte ihren Heimvorteil und flog besonders nahe am Publikum. Der Frecce Tricolori konnten sie die Show jedoch nicht stehlen. Sie sind immer noch eine Klasse für sich. Probleme hatte die Patrouille Suisse. Beim Tunnelmanöver fehlte die Solomaschine, die plötzlich eine Notlandung durchführte. Das Finale Grande fand somit mit nur 5 Maschinen und ohne Flares statt.

Für mich das herausragenste Display war die Vorführung von 3 Wasserbombern, deren Heimat sonst Marseille ist. Eine Canadair CL-415, eine Grumman S-2 Tracer und eine umgebaute De Havilland of Canada DHC-8 zeigten recht deutlich ihre Fähigkeiten, auch grössere Feuer löschen zu können.
